Several forms are provided to help you operate a school in your home with the same professional appearance and high academic standards as the very best conventional school. Three forms that are basic to the normal daily operation of your home school are the Record Master Sheet, the Daily Assignment Card, and the Student’s Progress Chart.

Activity and Academic Log Key

The Activity and Academic Log Key should be filled in on a daily basis using the letter codes. This is your official attendance record and it is very important to keep this document current. We will examine the log each quarter to record attendance for each student. If your school year will be longer than thirty-six weeks, you may obtain additional Record Master Sheets from A.L.S. Academy.

The front page serves as the home-school record, and the copies are reports to Accelerated Learning Systems Academy. Please take the time now to examine the sample master record sheet below.

Please notice the PACE number (top number) is entered to identify the unit for which the grades (bottom number) appear. Without the PACE number there is no way of knowing what unit the grade is for. The Midterm Grade is determined by averaging the twelve unit grades.

DAILY ASSIGNMENT CARD/GOAL CHART

The Daily Assignment Card/Goal Chart is a very valuable and useful form in your home school. The student should enter his name in large letters at the top of the card. The card is two sided; thus it can be used for two weeks. Each day as the child completes his goals in each subject, he draws a diagonal line through each completed goal. Then he enters the page numbers of the work he plans to do the next day in that subject. Do not allow students to scratch out or cover up goals--any goal changes must be made by the parent. The student must be required to enter specific page numbers in each subject using a pen.

Entries such as "Test" and "Review" are also acceptable; however, you must guard against a student delaying a test. Such entries should not be repeated two days in a row.

Younger children should average about two to six pages in each subject area every day depending on ability. Older students may be able to average four to ten pages per day in each subject. Students should be trained to set reasonable goals and accomplish them regularly. The Daily Assignment Card/Goal Chart helps the student maintain an orderly and consistent chart of his goals and his daily progress and achievement. This procedure teaches the child to strive to accomplish his goals each day. As time passes, the child learns that he can accomplish large amounts of work by doing small amounts each day and being consistent at working through each day’s goals on the Daily Assignment Card/Goal Chart.

The Daily Assignment Card/Goal Chart should be checked each day to make sure the student has actually completed the previous day’s goals and has set reasonable new goals in each subject. This checking should be done each day before or after actual study time. The child will only learn to be responsible and consistent in proper goal setting procedures if his goals are checked regularly, and if he is held accountable for his daily goals and accomplishments.

Each PACE should be completed in two to three weeks; therefore, daily goals should be set accordingly. Please study the sample goal chart below.

STUDENT PROGRESS CHART

The Student Progress Chart is a large card with subjects listed on the left side for each quarter of the academic year. The student’s name should be printed in large box letters at the top of the chart. A plastic cover may be used to keep the Student Progress chart neat and clean during the year. This plastic cover may be purchased at an office supply store near you.

When the student completes a PACE and passes the test, he receives a colored star. The star should be placed on the chart in the box representing the week in which the test was passed in a certain subject.

These little stars may at first seem unimportant to you, but achievement and rewards should always go hand in hand. This chart helps the student to visualize his overall achievement and progress in a concrete manner and is a very valuable addition to the daily operation of your home school.

When you register your child, you will receive a Record Master Sheet and a Student Progress Chart for the child enrolled. You will also receive a supply of Daily Assignment Cards/Goal Charts for each student enrolled. Please inform the Academy if you need additional supplies during the year. Normally, enough will be sent to last for about four quarters of academic work.

HOME SCHOOL JOURNAL OR DIARY

Each home school should establish and maintain a daily record of activities that cannot be recorded on the Record Master Sheet. Children about the fourth level should keep their own daily school diary to strengthen their abilities to communicate by writing their thoughts and observations. A parents’ diary or journal should include observation on student improvements, accomplishments, field trips, and other special events.
